What is Improv?
Improvisational Theater is a style of live performance in which the actions and dialogue are made up or "improvised" during the performance. Improvisational theater is performed in both comedic and dramatic styles, but the majority of Improv groups focus on comedic. Many improvisational actors also work as standard "scripted" actors, since many of the skills of listening and responding Improvisational theater has its roots in street performers, court jesters, and certain styles of theater such as the Italian Commedia Dell'Arte. In each of these styles of theater the link between audience and performer is more thoroughly established. The audience is not a passive observer in Improvisational Theater, but rather a co-creator with the players on stage. Improvisational theater may be scoffed at by more "serious" actors, but at least in my opinion, is one of the most dynamic forces in the world of modern theater. If you wish to study more or improve you own skills, I would strongly recommend the book Impro by Keith Johnstone. This book is considered by some to be a seminal work in the area of Improvisational Theater.
