Styles Replay

In this 3 to 4 person game the players perform a standard 1-2 minute scene based on an audience suggestion. They then replay the scene in a film, theater, or literary style supplied by the audience. The scene can be replayed in different styles as many times as needed, but 3 replays seems to be the optimal number. Examples for different styles: Kabuki, Spaghetti Western, WWII drama, Lifetime Original Movie, Shakespeare, Theater of the Absurd.

Musical Audition

In this 4 person game one of the players is a director casting a musical, the title of which is supplied by the audience, Example: The case of the cheese umbrella. The other three players are people auditioning for the musical. The director begins by explaining what the musical is about. They then ask the players, one by one, to sing audition pieces from the musical supplying various styles, Example: The opening song is entitled "Don't open indoors" and is in the style of Country Western. The auditioner must then make up the song on the spot in the style supplied. The game ends when the director has given all of the auditioners a chance to sing and has chosen who to cast.

4-Square

In this game for 4 players there are 4 scenes going on simultaneously. The players stand in a square shape on stage, with two players downstage and two upstage. At any time the host can call "rotate" and the players must rotate to the left or right one person. This changes the action into the next scene. Each scene is based on a suggestion from the audience. The only construct of this game is that the last line from the previous scene must become the first line for the next scene as the host calls "rotate". If two players are at a waterfall, and one exclaims "Look! Someone just fell in!", as the scene rotates, the next two players must start with, "Look! Someone just fell in!" even though they are at a shoe store. They must then justify the line within the scene. This works well if the host looks for good lines to rotate on.

Late for Work

This is an endowment/guessing game for 4 players. One player is the boss, two are coworkers, and one comes in and is late for work. The one who is late for work goes off, and the audience supplies the reasons why they were late for work, who they were with, and how they got back. The player then returns and the boss demands to know why they were late. The two coworkers mime out the three suggestions silently behind the boss's back, and the late player tries to guess. It is amusing for the boss to turn around every once in a while to catch the two coworkers in awkward positions, making them justify their actions. The scene ends when the late player has guessed all three correctly.

Playground insult

This is an endowment/guessing game for 6 players. Two players go off stage, and the players remaining are given an insult. The insult should take a predetermined form: You are a (verb)ing (noun) that (verb)s Example: You are a spinning turnip that exfoliates. The two players come back on stage and face each other. The others stand behind the players, two on each side. They then try to mime the verb, noun, and verb to the player behind the others back, while the player facing them tries to guess, spouting the insults to the player in front of him. Every 30 seconds or so the host calls switch, and the other player starts insulting, with the other set of two players now trying to mime the insults out. The game ends when one of the players gets the entire insult correct. This game will only work if the two players giving the silent mime clues work together. It is commonly required to split the word into pieces, or mime a word that sounds similar. You can mime "exfoliation" but the player may need you to show them the letter X and then folding something to get them to say "exfoliation."

Where am I?

This is a 2 person game endowment game. Each player is given a different location unknown to the other. They then get a relationship, and play out the scene as if they are in their own location. It is not necessary to for after the scene has reached its conclusion the players guess their others location. This game tends to work well if the players interact with their environment forcing the other player to justify why the objects are there. Example: Player A is at a police station. Player B is in a kindergarten classroom. Their relationship is camp counselor and camper.

Toppers

This game is somewhat of a departure from standard Improvisation. The point of this game is competitively "out-do" the other in the scene. Two players are given a suggestion, and begin a scene. At some point in the scene one person will make an observation or claim. The other person immediately tries to out-do, or one-up that claim. The other player then tries to out-do that claim, and so on back and forth until it is so ridiculous that one person must concede.

Example:
A: Let's get in my car.
B: Car? I have a monster truck.
A: Well, this is just my everyday car. I have a hovercraft in the garage.
B: I have a jet.
A: I have a fleet of jets.
B: I have a fleet of giant birds to carry me around.
A: …Fine. We'll take your fleet of giant birds to the store.

Movie Critics

In this game, for 4 players, two players are movie critics on a standard movie review show. The players get the a random name for a movie from the audience and proceed to review it, talking about parts that they liked. The reviewers introduce a clip, and the other two players act it out. The players must take the suggestions of the reviewers, "I enjoyed the part wher the mother character broke out into song, but why was there an orangutan in the scene?" Three or four clips makes this a fairly good length.

New Choice

This, along with Yes, And… is one of the most crucial games in Improvisation. In this game, for 2-4 players, a standard scene is begun with a suggestion from the audience. At any time the host can call out "New Choice!" and the player must instantly come up with a new statement or action.

Example:
A: Good morning, how are you today?
B: Fine
Host: New Choice!
B: Well actually I feel kind of tired.
Host: New Choice!
B: I feel like I may vomit.
Host: New Choice!
B: I feel better than I've ever felt!

This game not only helps players come up with new options, but helps players to make strong choices.

Dirty Little Secret

In this endowment/guessing game for 2 players, each one has a secret, supplied by the audience, that they are trying to hide from the other. The point of the game is to drop hints about your own secret while trying to guess the other's secret. The trick is to do this while actually creating a scene. The scene ends when both people have guessed the other's secret.

Good, Bad, Worst

In this game for 4 players, 3 act as an expert panel, taking questions from the audience. The fourth player acts as the host, fielding the questions. One of the players will be giving relatively good advice, the next bad advice, and the third the worst possible advice. Who is who is worked out before the game begins. It is helpful for at least a few of them to choose strong characters to play such as Jeffrey Dahmer, or Jesus. The game ends when the host player wraps up the expert panel.

Delorean

This is a four person game in which we see the events in the life of a character from the past, the present, and in the future. One player is the "Throughline" and the other three provide their scene partners, one from each time period. At any time, the host can call: "Past", "Present", or "Future", and the scene must immediately shift to that time. This game is interesting in that what happens in the past scene must affect the present and future, and what has happened in the future, must be justified by the past.

Laugh Riot

This is a variation of Four Square for six players. In this game three scenes are happening simultaneously, one at a time. In each location given, a riot is or is about to occur. The first pair's scene is established, and the host calls "Riot". The players shift and the next scene begins making its opening line the last line of the previous scene. The riots escalate in all three scenes until they become intolerable.

High Infidelity

This is an endowment/guessing game for 2 players. One player goes off, and the remaining player is given suggestions of a person, personality quirk, and sexual position (not a real one, just a random word or phrase). The player comes back on and has just returned from infidelity. That character is indicted by the character who received the suggestions from the audience in such a way as to give clues to the person, quirk, and sexual position their spouse has cheated on them with. This game ends when the cheating spouse can guess who they have cheated with, their personality quirk, and the position they used.

Comedy Kaze

This is a game for all players. In this game the host secretly obtains a "trigger" from the audience that a player would naturally do in the course of a scene (Crossing arms, touching another person, speaking in an accent…), and a list of ways to die (Death by drowning, Death by strangulation, Death by penguin…). The scene begins with two players on stage performing a standard scene. When one of them does the "trigger" the host calls out that "Death by strangulation!", and that player has to find a reason for their character to quickly die within the scene. Another player comes on to take their place, justifying their entrance and creating a new character. The scene ends when all players are dead.
