What are you Doing?

In this warm-up there are two players. One asks the other "What are you doing?" The player responds randomly (I'm picking oranges). The first player then immediately starts miming this. After a few seconds, the second player asks the first the same, "What are you doing?" The second player responds with something completely different from what he is doing (I'm job hunting on the internet.) The first player then immediately starts miming this. This warm-up helps to build acceptance, mime skills, and creative thinking.

Variations: The responses must start with certain initials supplied by the audience. Example: IE (I'm investigating everyone. I'm invigorating Euclid. I'm injury exfoliating…)

1-2-3-4

This game is for 4 people. One person starts on establishing the environment through mime. Once the environment is established, a second person enters and establishes the relationship between the characters by saying one line. The first player then creates a conflict with one line. A third person enters and escalates the conflict with one line. The fourth person enters and resolves the conflict with one line.

Example:

1: Person mimes washing dishes.
2: (Enters) Hi Mom!
1: Where have you been? It is 1 in the morning!
3: (Enters) Dude, you left your bottle of wine in the car.
4: (Enters) Excuse me ma'am, Officer Perkins. Your son is going to get a medal for taking a bottle of wine away from a 4-year old child who was driving.

This warm-up promotes the basics of a scene: setting, characters, relationship, conflict, escalation, resolution.

Variations: Have only 3 or 2 people in the scene.

Zip, Zap, Zop

In this warm-up everyone stands in a circle. A person starts by clap-pointing at another in the circle while yelling "Zip!" The person pointed at then clap-points to a person in the circle and yells "Zap!" That person then clap-points and yells "Zop!" This is continued (Zip! Zap! Zop!)

Variations: If a person says a wrong word or breaks the rhythm, they are out, and the remaining people continue.

Yes, and...

This is one of the quintessential exercises in Improvisation. It usually has two players either interacting or telling a story. The players alternate their speech, and each line (except the first) must start with "Yes, and…"

Example
A: We went to the beach today.
B: Yes, and we saw a whale.
A: Yes, and it was a humpback whale.
B: Yes, and we could hear it singing from a long way off.
A: Yes, and it was joined by a killer whale singing.
B: Yes, and the killer whale was off key.
A: Yes, and the humpback whale did not mind.
B: Yes, and the humpback whale offered to give the killer whale voice lessons.

This game emphasizes the agreeing and adding that are essential to effective improvisation.
